My Bucket List (and why you should have one too.)

Updated: Nov 22, 2020

We've all heard of it. They've even made a movie about it. The infamous bucket list. Some love it, some hate it, and some have a love-hate relationship with it.

It's where BIG DREAMS go to be attained and where some have died (let's face it, I'm never going to climb Mt. Everest...Not with over 600 bodies up there already. What?!)

So why did I (and why should you) create one? Here's a little secret I have learned about God. Ready? He actually likes lists. Why, when He is Lord of the universe and not confined to any parameters? Because He's into the creative details. Why else at the beginning of creation would He choose to make something new and different for six individual days? It could all have been done in one...or in a blink...poof. Existence. He took time to show us that the top things in life take creative dedication and work because they are worth our best efforts.

My first job was as a high school drama teacher back at the beginning of the new millennium. I was leaving home in Northern Virginia and moving to rural Virginia in the Shenandoah Valley. I would be living on my own for the first time, so my parents and my sister took a Saturday to go apartment shopping with me. This was not an easy task. I had circled a dozen places to check out in the Harrisonburg newspaper but each visit left me feeling unsatisfied. Nothing fit. No place seemed to be "my place."

The apartment list got shorter and shorter and the day long. That's when my dad said I should write out a specific list of what I needed and a few things I wanted. Holding nothing back, I wrote a long list of what I wanted. Down to one last place advertised, I called the landlord to schedule an appointment and found it was available to see immediately. Just two years old, with a pair of college girls its only occupants, the first floor apartment was situated off my main route to work and just behind a super market and the famed "Mr. J's" bagel shop. It was literally the perfect place. At the end of the tour all the boxes on my list were checked. That's when I knew beyond any doubt that God indeed cares about us, but He also cares about our hearts desires, and He's waiting to show us just how much when we seek Him to fulfill them.

Continuing to believe in God's best for me, I made a 7 From Heaven Bucket List. Yes, your list have more or less, but I've heard and seen God do great things with 7 so that's my goal. I've already marked #4 off this year! The point is to make your bucket list and see what happens next. Dare to dream. Dare to live. Dare to Dream Big!
